To Spay or Neuter
Why should I alter my dog?
Please take your pet to a facility if you can't keep it.
|
You should be able to return your dog to your breeder if you can't keep if, don't set it free to starve to death.

Don't Want to Show Your Dog?
If you do not show your dog then it is crucial to alter you pet.
For a female, every heat cycle she has it increases her
chances of getting cancer by 20%. Spay or neuter your puppy.
Altering can prevent the risk of breast cancer by 95% if done
before their first heat cycle. The benefits of spaying or
neutering your pets decrease with each year so do it early to
get the maximum benefits. Puppies can be spayed or
neutered as young as you want them to be. Consult your vet to
make sure they are healthy enough for this procedure. Also
doing it young will enable them to heal faster.
Spaying and neutering also decreases the risk of urinary tract
infections, ovarian or uterine cancer, enlargement of the
prostate gland and age related problems that make
urination difficult.
Because altering decreases the urge to reproduce then your
pet will be less likely to roam or be aggressive.
What will happen to my pet?
Your pet will be put under general anesthesia. Upon
completion the incision is closed with sutures and skin
bonding material. Staples are used in some cases. The
incision will usually heal in 10 to 14 days. Pain is minimal and
doesn't require pain medication. Boy the puppies are strong.
:) I personally always give my animals pain medication
because even though the vet tells me this, I worry how can a
hole in the belly not hurt. So don't feel bad if you are as wimpy
as me. :P
How would you feel?
Do you know that in six years, one female dog and her
offspring can produce more than 67,000 puppies. Because
there aren't nearly enough people to care for these animals,
6.5 million animals are euthanized each year in shelters
nationwide.
Something to think about:
Even if you can guarantee homes for all the puppies your pet
delivers it simply means that there will be fewer potential
homes for other unwanted pets.
For those who cannot afford to alter your pet at a vet please
check your area for a low cost spay and neuter clinic. You can
alter your pet for approximately $50 and some places offer
these services for free. The best place to start to look for one is
via superpages.com (just type in low cost spay neuter, city and
state), or call the SPCA, Humane Society, and the city
pound/animal control should have these resources also.
Knowing how hard it is to find a shelter for a dog/puppy in the
Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex you may want to know that the
Humane Society of North Texas (817-332-HSNT) will take ALL
animals. The problem is that they are a kill shelter but they
don't turn anyone away. They will also spay your female for free
if she has a litter and you surrender the entire litter to them. All
of the shelters are full, the streets is the only place unwanted
pets have to go, and they will starve to death. So please take
the necessary steps to ensure that you are helping to decrease
these numbers and not add to them.
